Apparently Pat Jaranson Masonry, Inc. has quality and commitment issues, and they admit it. Here's our experience... This company decided to refuse to rebuild my chimney on the day that I informed them of my brick selection because they were concerned that we wouldn’t be happy with their quality, similar to previous customers. They said I reminded them too much of customers in the past that were unhappy with their quality because I “asked similar questions and moved at a similar pace of previous unhappy customers”. They therefore didn’t want to take a chance with me because they were worried I wouldn’t be happy with their work, even before they began. Pat Jaranson Masonry originally gave us our quote in 2018. In March of 2020 we signed the contract, at an even higher rate vs. the 2018 quote to “cover their increased costs”, to move forward. This really upset this company that we waited so long, however we had other projects we wanted to finish first. Given that this was the first time we were having a company rebuild a chimney, we asked Jaranson about a half dozen rookie questions. This really upset them as well. They felt we were asking too many questions and accused us of “not trusting them”, even though we never questioned their answers. This was their words via their emails. When Illinois Brick Company (IBC) re-opened their showrooms to the public after pandemic stay-at-home orders ended, we picked out our brick within two weeks. This upset Jaranson again as to them, this “took too long”, however they never gave us a deadline. Finally, when we submitted our brick order to Jaranson, they said they would no longer rebuild our chimney because we reminded them of previous unhappy, complaining customers and they didn’t want to take a risk of building a chimney that we may not be happy with. Clearly they have self-perceived quality issues as reported by previous customers and they were worried that we would feel the same. They told us to “go elsewhere” after working with them for months, even though we didn’t complain about anything and was depending on them to rebuild our chimney. Extremely disappointing experience with this company, they pulled out of this project for no legitimate reasons after we signed a contract and provided our brick pick. I highly recommend going elsewhere, as they told us to take a hike unprovoked, and we will. Somehow Jaranson believes that they can profile customers based on the questions you ask, the pace that you move, and somehow predicts that you’ll be unhappy with the quality of their work similar to previous customers, so they tell you late in the game to go elsewhere. Very disappointing experience, we invested a lot of time into this company, and they completely pulled the rug from underneath us for no fault of our own. Very wrong and rude for them to presume that we would not be happy with their work and then refuse to even begin our contracted project. (this is my first negative online review of a company, unfortunately)

Frequently Asked Questions About Pat Jaranson Masonry Inc.

What is tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is a masonry maintenance technique that involves replacing deteriorated mortar in the joints of brick or stone walls with fresh mortar. This process enhances both the aesthetic appeal and structural integrity of the wall.

Why do I need chimney repair or tuckpointing?

Chimney repair or tuckpointing is necessary because moisture can penetrate cracks in the chimney cap, leading to deterioration of mortar joints and bricks. This deterioration, exacerbated by freeze-thaw cycles, can result in unsafe chimneys, falling bricks, interior water damage, and other structural issues. Timely repair or tuckpointing can prevent these problems and extend your chimney's lifespan.
