Frequently Asked Questions About Batterbee Roofing
My roof has only one layer at this time, can I nail over the existing or is it better to tear the roofing off?
Older shingles tend to cup as they dry out and age. The new layer of roofing will follow the contour of the existing shingles that may cause your new roof to look bumpy or uneven.
It’s important to note that the estimator will not be able to inspect the roof deck for heat damage, rot, or loose decking. The wood can be inspected from the attic for broken boards or water damage, but loose decking cannot be determined without removing the shingles and existing tar paper.
When are the roofing materials delivered and will they block my driveway or garage?
We generally schedule the materials to be delivered by our supplier the day we install your roof. In most cases, the materials will be loaded directly to the roof of your home. If there is any reason the materials cannot be loaded to your roof, you will be notified in advance.
We ask that you keep the driveway clear of vehicles on the day of delivery and also while the work is being performed.
Do I need to be home while the work is being done?
No, in fact many customers prefer not to be home when the work begins. However, some homeowners like to be home to watch the work in progress.
Do I need to protect any items inside my house from possible damage?
Yes. On all roofing jobs there is a degree of vibration that comes down through the framework of the home. It is recommended that you safeguard all fragile items such as knick-knacks and pictures that are not securely mounted to the wall. If in doubt, take a few minutes to protect any non-replaceable items.
Will discarded nails be a safety concern?
We remove all the roofing debris, clean out the gutters and do a thorough cleaning of the grounds and surrounding landscaping. Included in this is the use of a magnet to pick up any nails that have reached the ground.
How can a home owner recognize when a roof system has problems?
All too often, roof system problems are discovered after leaking or other serious damage occurs. Yearly inspections often can uncover cracked, warped or missing shingles; loose seams and deteriorated flashings; excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters or downspouts; and other visible signs of roof system problems. Indoors, look for cracked paint, discolored plasterboard and peeling wallpaper as signs of damaged roof areas.
What are my options if I decide to have a roof replacement?
You have two basic options:
You can choose a complete replacement of the roof system, involving a tear off of your existing roof system
You can re-cover the existing roof system, involving only the installation of a new one
If you’ve already had one re-cover installed on your original roof system, check with Batterbee Roofing. In many instances, building code requirements allow no more than one roof system re-cover before a complete replacement is necessary. We can answer your questions and assist you with choosing the right roof system.
My roof leaks. Do I need to have it replaced completely?
Not necessarily. Leaks can result from flashings that have come loose or a section of the roof system being damaged. A complete roof system failure, however, generally is irreversible and can be the result of improper installation or choice of materials or the roof system installation is inappropriate for the home or building.
How long should my roof last?
That depends on a few factors such as the roof type, pitch/slope of the roof, ventilation, installation, maintenance, and weather. As a rule of thumb: a basic three-tab fiberglass shingle roof will last 15 to 25 years, while a flat roof will last 5 to 15 years.

Are your roofers your own employees or subcontracted?

What will a new roof replacement cost?
The price of a new roof replacement varies widely, depending on such things as the materials selected, the quality of the contractor doing the work, and the type of home or building. Keep in mind that price is only one factor, and it must be balanced with the quality of the materials and workmanship.
For each roofing material, there are different grades and corresponding prices. There also are a variety of styles and shapes. You need to look at the full product range and make a choice based on your budget and needs. Our roof specialists can assist you in choosing the right materials for your home and your budget.
What causes algae growth on my roof?
Airborne algae is deposited and grows on the roof, resulting in a dark discoloration, usually brown to black, and a streaked, dirty-looking rooftop. Algae occurs mostly in warm, humid climates, but doesn’t affect long-term performance.
Can I pressure wash my roof to remove algae growth?
High-pressure washing is not recommended because of the possibility of removing granules, which can shorten the life of the roofing system.
Can discoloration from algae and fungus be removed from my roof?
Yes, it can be removed. Call Batterbee Roofing to find out what can be done.
What causes buckling?
There are many factors that might cause buckling including:
Improperly applied felt
Wrinkled underlayment
Roof deck movement
Spacers not used in between roof deck boards
Poor roof ventilation
New shingles applied over old, rough shingles
Why Do I have Ceiling Spots?
Ceiling spots can be caused by leaks in your roof. We recommend check:
Your attic for leaks in deck
The chimney and vents for cracks in flashing
Rafters for leaks that “travel” away from original source
Eaves for water backup from ice dams
Your roof for damaged shingles
Why do I have missing Shingles?
Causes of missing shingles can be due to improper fastening or exposure to high winds. Shingles that have blown off completely should be replaced. For shingles with tabs blowing up and down, they can be hand sealed with asphalt cement commonly referred to as flashing cement.
What does it mean if my shingles are blistering?
Blistering shingles are caused by moisture in the shingle. If the blisters break open revealing asphalt, the affected shingle(s) should be replaced.
Can I install new roofing over an existing single layer of shingles?
While you can nail over existing shingles, older shingles may cause the new roof to appear bumpy or uneven. Also, proper inspection for damage requires removing old shingles.
When are roofing materials delivered, and will they block my driveway?
Materials are usually delivered the day of installation and loaded directly onto your roof. You will be notified if material can't be roof-loaded. Please keep your driveway clear during delivery and work.
Do I need to be home during roofing work?
No, it's not necessary to be home. Many customers prefer not to be present while work starts, but some do like to watch the progress.
How does Batterbee Roofing handle debris and safety on the job site?
They remove all debris, clean gutters and grounds thoroughly, and use magnets to pick up any nails to ensure safety.
