  Invested a large sum of money with them a little over 3 years ago and now has lost 40% of it's value... Not impressed.

  These people are great. They are no bs and will help you do exactly what you want with your investments without trying to sell you products with high fees. They lay out all options on the table and explain each one. They are very knowledgeable and pleasant to work with.

  TRUST SOMEONE ELSE. Keep in mind these people are SALESPEOPLE, not people who have a fiduciary obligation to recommend what's best for you. They're out to take your money. They will screw you if you so much as look the other way. Buy life insurance through someone reputable, and instead of buying securities through these people, just go through a reputable company and put your money in low-fee index funds or another safe and simple investment product with low fees. Source: They took advantage of a personal relationship I had with one of their salespeople and have screwed me out of thousands, and their investment products have consistently underperformed the market for me. STAY AWAY.

  Their "advisers" are more like salespeople who try to sell you their investment products. Keep in mind they want you to make the investment choices that benefit them, not you or your family. They're very helpful when you have money they can snatch up, but if you want to make a move that doesn't benefit them specifically they become difficult and frustrating. That aside, the growth of my retirement fund has been fairly average, about 3%/yr between 2009 and 2015.
