Even though I had a Master’s degree and a great GPA- I did not have success in even getting interviews. I was advised to meet with Elder Jeppson for my resume and was informed that Elder Jeppson had worked in HR for many years and frequently met with jobseekers to help them develop their resumes. I had some concerns about his suggestion-yet since I wasn’t even getting interviews I knew I had nothing to lose so I reached out to him for help. I can tell you that my fears were completely unfounded as he was definitely not out of touch. It took several sessions to get my resume where it needed to be and another few hours for my LinkedIn profile. Elder Jeppson was always polite and patient with me about the changes I needed to make. He taught me about bridging skills learned in one position to others. Once that train of thought took hold in my mind, ideas flowed and I looked at all of my life experiences through new lenses. I had continued applying for jobs and once I began submitting the updated versions I began receiving invitations to interview. As we fine-tuned it further, I got calls from better places that I really wanted to work for. I received so many compliments on my résumé that I made sure to thank Elder Jeppson for his help. He humbly responded that it’s my skills and accomplishments but, even though I did not accomplish anything new those weeks we worked together, those skills and accomplishments are now stated in a way to display what firms are looking for and I’ve learned that so much of this is how you present yourself. I was also lacking a cover photo in LinkedIn and he explained that a cover photo frequently influenced employer’s first impression of me. (Like Elder Young said, “We’re always networking-whether intentionally or not.”) I wanted to do something judicial in nature but that also represented me- we went with a picture of Lady Justice holding scales. It’s simple and reflects my law degree as well as nurturing nature. Another difficulty was that I had been a stay at home wife and mom for about ten years. I thought perhaps I just shouldn’t mention it but being a mother is a large party of who I am, so omitting it didn’t seem right either. I told Elder Petrini that an evaluator had described me as “warm, affectionate, and nurturing”, he was confident that those traits could transfer over and they’d show me how to do it. I’m so grateful for the missionaries who serve at the Employment Center. They were cheerful, optimistic and expressed their confidence in me especially on hard days when I hit dead ends. Every detail mattered and made a difference, I can never thank them enough.

They were able to help me get experience with my resume and job interviews but every Wednesday, they call you about job search progress, which honestly got grating during times when I was struggling with finding suitable job listings.
