NO STARS I had two large items to move and knew I needed a vehicle with a cargo area 12' in length. 11.5' might work, but 12 would be preferable. I called Penske to make my reservation and get their recommendation. They suggested a Large Van. The staff was polite and seemed knowledgeable. I did my research after the fact and found that most vans have a cargo length of 10', with a few going to 11'. I called to change my reservation to a truck. Again, Penske staff was polite. The day of the move I went to Home Depot to pick up the truck. When I presented my reservation email, the Home Depot employee immediately began to apologize. They've been trying to get in touch with the Penske office for the last hour. It seems someone went to pick up a vehicle at Home Depot before me, and Home Depot did not have any record of their reservation. That customer left with no truck. The Home Depot Employee was very nice, looked over my reservation and said that they did not have a truck for me, nor did they have any record of my reservation, but they had two cargo vans available and I was welcomed to take one. I explained I needed a 12' long cargo area, and she agreed to show me the van. It measured 10', so the van would not work for me. She attempted to call Penske for the third time since I arrived, and she did get an answer. Penske told her that they had my reservation on file (though they didn't say why Home Depot didn't have that copy), and that there was a van at the corporate office with an 11.5' cargo bed I could use if I was willing to drive down to the corporate office (20 minutes out of my way) to pick it up. Additionally, they would give me a 30% discount on the rental of the van. I agreed and made the trip. When I arrived at the Penske Corporate Office, the same gentleman we spoke to on the phone was there. He said the van was ready to go and he had a rental agreement ready. I explained again that I needed a 12' long cargo area, I could maybe make 11.5' work, but that I'd like to measure it before I wasted any more of my day. He agreed,, but he also told me all the other trucks on the lot were reserved, but he was sure the van would hold plenty. The van had a cargo area of 10'. He started explaining how people tend to over estimate what they really need and how he personally moved a whole one bed room apartment in a van in a single trip. He might've been trying to help, but it was extremely unwanted and condescending- especially considering I've already wasted time and gas because Penske couldn't coordinate with Home Depot and failed to make an appropriate recommendation three times in a row. I was pretty livid at this point and was now 2 hours behind my expected start time and Penske still hadn't provided a vehicle that I requested. After asking the guy what the hell was the point of making a reservation, a truck "magically" became free. I suspect they gave away someone else's reservation. The guy told me they would discount my mileage by 15%. I agreed, signed the paper work and left. The truck was clean, in very good shape, and felt newer. It performed very well. Returning the truck was a pain. They told me where the key return box was, but on my return it wasn't there. Several other people returned trucks and they were unable to find it either. When the charges hit my credit card, I did not have an itemized invoice from Penske. I called them to obtain one. That process went smoothly. The invoice did not show any discounts, so I called again. The staff I spoke with was nice and walked me through my bill. We determined that while the 15% mileage discount was not shown, the listed price per mile was less than the standard charge. So while it wasn't listed as a discount, it was in fact discounted. It was also closer to 12%, not 15%. He told me that since the mileage was already discounted, he couldn't adjust it further. We also determined that the initial discount of 30% off the rental fee was not applied at all. He refunded that amount to my credit card.

I rented a van. I moved some stuff. I returned the van. I think the price was pretty unreasonable, and the people at Home Depot who do Penske rentals are so overwhelmed that they have forgotten what professional courtesy is. Overall this was such an unpleasant and miserable slow experience that I would definitely recommend Uhaul. They will not care if you are dissatisfied with your experience. They don't mind if you never come back again. Home Depot doesn't seem concerned if the Penske Renters have a less than optimal experience.
