I will start by saying that if you are tenacious enough to successfully order food, the kitchen is on point and the food is actually very good, though overpriced as you would expect at a theater. Their mobile ordering system simply doesn't work and their management doesn't care in the least. That's the short version.
Here's the long version:
Sadly, this place bears no resemblance to what it once was. If you want to order food from your seat, prepare for a terrible user experience.
I'm all in favor of mobile ordering. Normally you scan a QR code which pulls up a menu, including your table or seat information. Then you select your items. Finally, you check out using your mobile wallet or, worst case manually enter a credit card. The whole process should take maybe 3 minutes if you really need to peruse the menu.
Not at Movie Tavern.
First, you have to download their app and sign up for an account just to order food. (Previously you just pushed a button on your tray and a server would show up and take your order.) Then you have to choose your theater. Yes, that's right. Their app doesn't bother to use location to figure out which theater you are in even though it helpfully puts it at the top of the list as 0.0 miles away.
Now that you are at the menu, you can add items to your order. When you're done, you select "Check Out." Normally this would be where you pay for your order. Instead, the app literally checks out. If the item or an option that you selected on an item is not available, you get a cryptic popup message like:
"Sorry! The following items are not currently available
Menu Item (s): Pick Your Platter
Modifier (s) : Wonton Mozzarella Sticks, Burger Sliders, Chicken Tenders, Ranch, Creamy Sriracha, Marinara
Please remove these items and proceed with your order."
Which modifier is the issue? You'll have to guess and try again. Whoever designed their app apparently wasn't smart enough to figure out how to remove unavailable items from the app menu. Everything is available to order. You only find out there is a problem when the app submits the finished order to the system, shows you an error, and sends you back to the menu without enough information for you to fix it yourself.
This was one of the 3 error messages I got. I also got an error message for making "too many modifications" to a chicken sandwich by removing the cheese, and substituting a salad for fries.
After spending almost 15 minutes installing the app, signing up for an account, and resolving error messages, I hit the Check Out button a final time to learn that "The system cannot process your order at this time. Please try later." By now we are 3 minutes into the actual movie. I headed to the lobby in search of help. The manager I spoke to wasn't surprised the mobile ordering was not working. Instead, she seemed to think that it was my fault for trying to order from my seat rather than simply ordering food at the bar. Now 5 minutes into the movie, the manager stared blankly at me for 30 seconds. I finally said "I started ordering food 10 minutes before previews, and it's now 5 minutes into the movie. What happens now?" She reluctantly offered me comp tickets since the next showing was also sold out. By the time I was done waiting in line, paying for our order at the bar and back at my seat, it was 25 minutes after show time. (A sold out sneak peek.)
Considering the technology to make the experience quick and easy from a phone has existed since about 2017, one wonders what Marcus was thinking when they "upgraded" from an old-school but very effective system where servers would take your orders, to the poorly designed and non-functional mess they now have. If you're going to replace humans with technology to cut costs, at least make the experience faster and easier and maybe train your managers to deal with issues in a friendly manner rather than blaming the customer when the system doesn't work.
I used to enjoy going to Movie Tavern. Too bad those days are gone.
