Frequently Asked Questions About Norton Equipment Company
What does bailing wire gauge mean?
Gauge (ga) is the metric used to define the thickness of baling wire. The thicker the wire, the lower the gauge, and the stronger the material is. A 10 gauge, for example, is stronger than a 14 gauge, and better suited for heavy-duty tasks.
What gauge baling wire do I need?
The recommended gauge varies depending on the baler type, size and weight of the bales and the material being processed. Here’s the industry standard:
Vertical Balers: 12 ga - 14 ga, depending on the material
Horizontal Balers: 10 ga - 12 ga, depending on the material and bale size
Auto Tie Balers: 10 gauge - 12 gauge, depending on the material, bale size and number of wires used per bale. As a rule of thumb, bales with fewer wires require a thicker gauge.
Two Ram Balers: 10 gauge - 13 gauge, although small two rams may use 13 gauge wire
Common wire gauges by baler type:
Vertical Balers
Cardboard: 13-14 gauge
Newspaper: 12-13 gauge
Plastic Shrink Wrap: 13-14 gauge
Plastics: 12-13 gauge
Foam: 11 gauge
Horizontal Balers
Cardboard: 11-13 gauge
Newspaper: 12-13 gauge
Plastic Shrink Wrap: 12-13 gauge
Plastics: 11-12 gauge
Foam: 12 gauge
Auto Tie Balers
Cardboard: 10-12 gauge
Newspaper: 10-12 gauge
Plastic Shrink Wrap: 10-12 gauge

Foam: 10-11 gauge
Two Ram Balers

Newspaper: 11-13 gauge
Plastic Shrink Wrap: 11-12 gauge
Plastics: 11-12 gauge
Foam: 11-12 gauge
What length of wire do I need?
Gauge wire length is determined by two factors: the size of the bales and the direction the baler ties (horizontal or vertical). Vertical balers usually tie vertically, with the opposite applying to horizontal balers. If you’re not sure, look at the tie slots or the section where the wire feeds through. Is it vertical or horizontal?
Once you’ve figured out which direction you need, it’s time to measure a finished bale or the inside of the chamber. Vertically tied bales should be twice the height and depth, whereas horizontally tied bales should be twice the length and width. Add 12-18” to the length to allow for tying.
Example: A 60” vertical baler produces a bale that is 60” wide x 48” high x 30” deep. The wire must be twice the height and twice the width: 48” x 2 + 30” x 2 = 156”. Add 12-18” for tying, and you’ll need 168” to 174” of wire.
168 in. / 12 ft. = 14 ft. of wire is required.
How large of a baler do I need?
It really depends on the type of material you want to process and how much of it you expect to compress each month. Vertical balers can compress 20 tons of loose old corrugated cardboard per week, where horizontal units can easily handle 25 tons per day, (depending on the machine, you could do that per day or more).
Do you sell used balers?
Yes, we have used recycling equipment for sale, but availability depends on our inventory. Let us know what you’re looking for and we’ll see how we can help. Not sure? Still, give us a call and we’ll perform a a waste analysis program and find out which style is right for you. We also accept used recycling equipment.
Can I rent a baler?
Balers can be rented or leased. Get in touch for more information.
What can I put in a baler?
The materials your baler can process depends on the model and type of baler. Most units can process old corrugated cardboard, plastic film, shrink wrap, plastic bottles, office paper, aluminum, etc.
What will my baler cost?
Baler costs vary depending on your unique requirements. Norton Equipment Co. offers a huge selection of balers, ranging from low-cost vertical to high-volume horizontals.
Do you offer maintenance plans for my baler?
Yes, we offer preventive maintenance and repair services for all baler brands and models.
