- DSDavid and Tara SheaNov 4, 20251.0I came to United Rentals the other day to purchase a desk that was listed on Marketplace. I purchased the desk for $75, but the employee didn’t have change for $80. I offered to buy the other desk for $100 total. The employee made a call and agreed to $125 for both. I only had $100, so I went across the street to the ATM at 7-11. I gave him the additional $45. Then it got awkward. He insisted he returned the original $80. I was certain he had not. We both searched our pockets but both felt strongly that the other had the money. I left without a desk and the $80. I explained the situation to the seller on Marketplace, Kimberly, who was different than the employee. She told me the video surveillance showed no transfer of money. I told her that wasn’t in dispute, we both agreed I gave him $80, but disputed if it was given back. I went back to United to review the surveillance video. It was not great video, but enough to see me take my wallet out of my pocket and hand the employee something (cash). Then it showed the employee talking on the phone. There was no surveillance showing the employee handing anything back. The employee wasn’t around and Kimberly didn’t seem to care enough to try to resolve the dispute. I left for the second time short $80 and no desk. The money really isn’t the issue. For me it was the time I spent coming from Lompoc and the lack of interest in resolving a problem. Glad we weren’t disputing the condition of an expensive tractor, etc.
